JoJo Monroe is a London-based artist and mentor.

“I was brought up, lived and worked in Germany, North Africa, the Middle East, Scotland, Spain, London, France, Central America, the US and a bunch of other places. The most permanent objects in my life other than my kids, are Arabic rugs from my childhood. I was and remain, at heart, a nomad.

This life shifting across many cultures I guess must influence my work – a passionate childhood reading of mythologies, and my work in the film industry are also strong influences.

I like stories that have a timeless and universal appeal. I use whatever media seems most appropriate – oil, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, pencil, film, stills photography, fabric. With a busy life as a single parent, I tend to work fast and without self-censorship… I can be painting while cooking, advising on homework, and taking a phone call from another kid at the same time. I often work from film and video screen-grabs or from photos that I take. But, equally, I will freestyle drawings and paintings from the imagination without any reference. I work on canvas and paper – but also on wood, glass, and metal – almost any flat-ish surface. I am the co-designer of sustainable fashion under the label MoJo Fierce.“

For various reasons, JoJo prefers to remain in the background as an artist and does not make personal appearances. If you’re interested in a piece for purchase or commission, contact their representation at; Lisa.Rigg@thescreenartsinstitute.com
